WHEN GOALIES ATTACK

It throws off my body clock to be playing ice hockey games that start at 10:15 p.m. on a Sunday night, but the Gretzky effect has ensured that southern California ice rinks are booked solid. There was astonishingly heavy traffic on the freeways given the hour, and just as unsettling was the craziness and dissonance of the 1982 live Hawkwind album that provided the soundtrack. Finally, a powerful rendition of the slower, groovy “Waiting For Tomorrow” issued forth as the roads opened up during the last few miles, and we also got a great bit of bonus music as Fear Factory’s “Recharger” blared out from the rink PA during our warmup skate.

The boring part is that we beat the Magic Dragons 3-1. We spotted them the opening goal late in the 1st and then tied it, scored 2 more in the second and (finally!) played a scoreless, shut-down third period. It was our best 60-minute effort so far, and it was a completely different game from our previous victory against them, which featured a lot of rough play and bad words.

Okay, almost completely different, because it would seem that a certain goalie on the Magic Dragons has anger management issues. At some point early in the 3rd period our winger John darted for the net to chase a rebound. Their goalie covered it, but as he did John was pushed from behind by a Magic Dragons defender and collided with their goalie before tumbling over. To say their goalie lost it would be an understatement. Somehow John ended up on his back while their goalie flailed away at him, trying to throw punches. I emphasize the word trying because John is much taller than the goalie and was basically trying to de-escalate the situation by stiff-arming him, so what was actually happening was the goalie flailing away at a target he was a shade too far away to hit. However, it went on just long enough that our winger Ben had seen enough and stepped in to try and bear hug the goalie, at which point another player from the Magic Dragons steamed in and tackled Ben.

A minute later the referees untangled everyone while the goalie was screaming into one ref’s face, who did a remarkable job of keeping cool, saying “I’m not going to hit you, but I am going to stop you!” to the goalie while physically restraining him from trying to go after John again. The game then stopped for several minutes as the referees sorted out penalties, and ultimately they washed out except that Ben got an extra 10 minutes for joining in to try and stop things. Then before the game started the goalie really pressed his luck and started arguing with the same referee again, but I was too far away to hear what was said. That’s now the second straight game where this goalie has become involved in an incident where he loses his temper and our skater gets a 10-minute misconduct while somehow he doesn’t. Thinking about it now, I guess they can’t really toss him from the game last or sit him for 10 because there are no backup goalies on our teams and we were the final game of the night, so it’s not like a sub was available. The rest of the game was played without incident, but the goalie was absent from the handshake line afterwards.  I don’t know whether that was voluntary or whether the referees sent him off to avoid the possibility of further trouble.

Sometimes I just don’t get it. I’m definitely competitive, just like anyone else on the ice, and I can definitely get caught up in the moment, as can anyone else on the ice, but man…that was some next-level anger.

Oh, we’re 3-3 now, and the second half of that Hawkwind concert made for one tripped-out, freaky, sci-fi- gone-very-wrong space rock soundtrack on the drive home.
