TOP SHELVED

Ah, it was nice to be back at the rink. So nice. I’m one of those people who loves to arrive early for games and just take in the atmosphere. I’ve also learned it’s much better if I give myself some extra time to stretch properly before taking more extra time to get my gear on - it takes me longer than most because I take forever to tie my skates properly, and then switching out the prosthetic arms takes a few minutes as well. And on this day I decided to arrive a full two hours early to get my skates sharpened, too - I correctly predicted that there would be a line of people looking to do the exact same thing, and so there was no rush at all as I sauntered around the parking lot, talked with league director Devin and took in some of the Upper Copper division game that was happening (that’s two levels above us.) Once the Upper Copper dudes cleared out of our assigned dressing room I dumped my gear and spent the better part of 20 minutes
stretching out and walking around, and by the time I was digging my equipment out of my bag the teammates started coming in one by one.

The vast majority of us are back from last year’s incarnation as the Puck Buddies, and as a group we are optimistic about our chances this year based on how well we played as a group during the final month of the season. In between the “Heyyyy, how’s it goinnn’?” greetings everyone got as they entered, there was a definite buzz as lines and defensive pairings were decided and the zamboni finished cleaning the ice. As we all made our way onto the ice for a quick warmup, I took a few strides and then went to make a standard hockey stop to test out the newly sharpened blades, and all of a sudden my skates don’t react the way I’m used to and my blades dig in and I topple over. Welcome back, boyo. On the bright side, I bet it looked pretty comical to anyone who saw it. You’re welcome.

And the good feeling we took out onto the ice made our 2-0 loss to Top Shelf all the more frustrating. None of us could remember being shut out before, and props have to go to Top Shelf’s goalie (word has it he was a sub), who played a great game and was never really out of position. Normally at this level a goalie will give you a great opportunity or two every game, but that didn’t happen tonight. Dude even saved a perfectly-placed penalty shot by Adam (one of our best shooters) with a few seconds left to preserve the shutout. Afterwards the scoresheet said we had outshot them something like 27-14, and in general we felt like we had been the better team for much of the game, but...we gave up one good goal and one fluky one and we simply could not close the deal at the other end. Part of it might have been some rink rust on some people’s part (definitely mine), but it just seemed to be one of those games where we just did not solve their goalie and
the hockey gods did not elect to bestow any favors upon us either. As I wrote this I’m nearly forgot that our line did make some nice plays and had a couple near-misses, but my faceoff percentage was definitely under 50 and I never really got to the point where I was able to just stop thinking and just play.

Then once I got home my left knee started acting up. I stretched out when I got home and that’s when I started to feel it, and then a few hours I woke up later in the middle of the night and it was hurting. I have no idea what I did, or how or when I did it. I certainly didn’t feel it during the game. Cue several days of ice packs, anti-inflammatory cream, an altered training regimen, a decidedly annoyed disposition, and a status of “questionable” for this Sunday’s game against the Magic Dragons.

And we’re 0-1.
