TAKE HOLD OF THE SKATES

This was the first hockey skating class in 3 weeks, after missing one to go to the Amputee Coalition conference and a holiday weekend where no class was scheduled. The soundtrack for the drives to and from the rink this was the new Queensryche album, simply entitled “Queensryche”. It’s a difficult trick indeed when a band has to replace a world-class vocalist 30 years into their career, but Todd La Torre pulls it off and then some. The album has a familiar, old-school feel and sounds as if it could have been the album that followed “Rage For Order” in 1987. Right now the standout tracks for me are “Redemption”, “Vindication” and “Fallout”.

Because I wasn’t rushed to class this time, I was able to get out onto the ice early and get a good 15 minutes of warmup skating in, but the weeks off definite became apparent fast as my balance and strides felt much less assured. Like any other activity that requires practice, if you take a break you get rusty.

As we lined up for class to start, we were greeted by Coach Patrick, who was filling in for away-in-Germany Coach Brian. Patrick let us know that he was one of the hockey coaches from the afternoon classes and then dove right into it. Since he didn’t really know any of us or how far along we were, he had each skater take a couple laps around our end of the rink so he could see how people skated and stopped. Once he got a look at us he quickly realized that, to paraphrase Ty Webb from Caddyshack, we’re not... good.

Patrick then did what any good coach with an underperforming group does - go back to fundamentals. We ended up spending the class performing very basic moves - power strides, tight turns and stops, but before we did each drill we got great explanations about the mechanics behind each of the motions. We got great explanations and demonstrations of where each skate is supposed to be, what motions your legs should be making, how low down you should be and how your weight should be distributed as you make each stride. On a couple of occasions Patrick apologized to us if we felt like we had heard this all before, but I was just eating this up. This was the sort of instruction that would probably go in one ear and mostly out the other as a junior high student, but as an adult with a long way to go I couldn’t hear enough of this. So even though tonight was about getting back up to speed, I did come away tonight feeling like I learned something.

The fundamentals of many activities never change, but there are lots of different ways to have them explained to you and this class reinforced that concept.
