SEALFIT CHALLENGE: MISSION SECURED

Right off the bat I am faced with a blogging task of epic proportions. How does one write about a three-day event during which I met so many exceptional people and did so much that I could easily generate 50 full-length blog entries out of it? I guess it's best to just crank out a condensed version for now, so here are the basics:

WHO: Transition Possible Foundation, Sealfit, Alamo CrossFit, Concept 2, 15 Adaptive Athletes and their 15 partner CEOs.

WHAT: The inaugural SEALFIT Challenge. It's a 12-hour event that pairs up 15 adaptive athletes with 15 CEOs and tests everyone's mental and physical prowess through 5 consecutive hours of CrossFit competition ("the warmup"), a break for lunch, and then 6 hours of SEALFIT training from, without exaggeration, some of the toughest human beings on the planet.

WHEN: Thursday, April 18th (initial meeting and assessments, initial meetings of CEOs and adaptive athletes), Friday, April 19th (media day and presentation by SEALFIT CEO Mark Divine) and Saturday April 20th (SEALFIT Challenge from 6 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)

WHERE: Alamo CrossFit in San Antonio, Texas

WHY: Fundraising for the non-profit organization Transition Possible, which provides CrossFit scholarships and resources for individuals with prosthetics and other injuries.

HOW: Each of the 15 athletes was paired with a sponsoring CEO, and over the space of 12 hours, the SEALFIT coaches put us through the longest and hardest day of training I have ever had. The first five hours was a timed CrossFit competition between the 15 teams (my most excellent partner CEO Roy Cozart and I placed 3rd out of 15), and then after a break for lunch the 30 of us got six hours of brutal, more or less nonstop SEAL training modeled on Navy SEAL Hell Week.

At this point it's Monday morning at 7:00 a.m., 36 hours after the SEALFIT Challenge is over. While I am proud to be able to say I got through it, I'm paying the price for it now and will continue to do so for several days. I'm still achingly sore from neck to ankle, to the point where it hurts to move, and I'm having a hard time trying to write coherently. However, here's what I took away from all this:

  1. This was for a great cause, so the hurt is worth it. It will go away soon.
  2. I met so many incredible people during my three days in Austin that I could write about them nonstop for two weeks and not cover them all. But I can guarantee that a number of these folks will make appearances here later.
  3. My CEO partner, Roy Cozart, is a complete badass and I wouldn't have made it through the day without him.
  4. My respect level for our Armed Forces and our veterans was at a high level before this, but I am now in complete awe of the Navy SEALs, what they do, and how they train. They could make a prequel to the film Zero Dark Thirty that just focuses on BUD/S training and it would be another full-length film in its own right.
  5. This was my first real experience as a member of the adaptive athlete community, and...wow. Meeting and training with these folks made me feel like that little girl in the bumblebee costume did about halfway through the Blind Melon video for "No Rain". (Remember this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qVPNONdF58)

Here are a few links for you guys to check out that will help this all to make a bit more sense:

And with that, I'm off to work. Happy Monday!
