GD50: FARE THEE WELL, THE RECAP - 11 FINAL THOUGHTS

Eleven final thoughts on the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary “Fare Thee Well” shows after a couple weeks of letting it all sink in:

THE SHOWS

1. The overall experience of the five shows was everything I had hoped it would be, and my hopes were essentially high expectations.

2. I wrote up insanely long recaps of each night here, and I’m fully aware they are exercises in unfettered self-indulgence to 99.9% of the world. As much as anything, I wanted to get down as many thoughts as I could within 24 hours of each show occurring, and it’ll be nice to have them to read a long time from now. If you actually slogged through any of them, thank you.

3. The first night of Santa Clara (the “Fillmore night”) was my favorite of the five. Objectively, the the first night of Chicago (the “Late 70s’ night”) was the best of the five. All the shows were strong, though, and an attendee’s favorite show was probably the one with the set list they liked best.

4. Trey Anastasio did a fantastic job filling Jerry Garcia’s shoes. He’s now going to have to put up with people telling him that every time he leaves his house for the rest of his life.

THE STATS

5. Eleven notable original songs that were not played during the shows:  Looks Like Rain, Greatest Story Ever Told, Lazy Lightning/Supplication, Black Throated Wind, Sugaree, Ship Of Fools, Ramble On Rose, Dire Wolf, Here Comes Sunshine, New Speedway Boogie.

6. Ten notable cover songs that were not played during the shows: Promised Land, Iko Iko, Woman Smarter, Big Railroad Blues, Peggy-O, El Paso, Cold Rain & Snow, Good Lovin’, Johnny B. Goode, Around & Around.

7. Only two Pigpen-led songs (Alligator and Lovelight) were played during the five shows, and no songs written or led by Brent Mydland, Vince Welnick or Donna Godchaux were played.

THE BUSINESS

8. If they could do it over, I think they would have played nine shows (three each in New York, Chicago, and Santa Clara) and used the electronic lottery ticketing system for all of them.

9. Resurrecting the old-school mail order process for the Chicago shows was a classic example of doing the right and respectful thing, only to have it blow up in your face because of the unexpected demand. No good deed went unpunished during the ticketing process.

10. Promoter Peter Shapiro deserves a lot of credit for making these shows happen and then having them run as smoothly as they did. He got a lot of grief along the way that he did not deserve, and he earned his money.

11. It’s going to be interesting to see if these really are the last shows. Bill Kreutzman already said he had a great time and wished there had been more, and Dean Sotillie of the “Grateful Dean” blog was the first one to say what I also think could happen: a once-per-year run of three shows while the “Core Four” are still able to do it.
