BACK TO SCHOOL, PART 2: MEET THE SFSU CREW

So here I am, back on a bustling college campus to, like, y’know, do real academic stuff, on a weekday, for the first time since the 1990s. As I strolled across campus at around 9 a.m., but as I looked around I made the somewhat startling realization that almost everyone I can see is about half my age. Ok, that feels weird. I arrived early on the first day and figured I’d grab a copy of the school newspaper to see what’s going on around here, but it would appear that they no longer do the print version thing. Green, I guess, but does that mean that protesters set their iPads on fire in front of the campus center when someone runs an article or an editorial in that they don’t like? As a Wesleyan grad, I’m just wondering.

I met up with Dr. Mitchell at 9:30 and we set up shop in a small classroom/conference room, and one by one a very exceptional group of people arrived. First there was Lee the graduate student, and then there was this crew who comprise Kinesiology 599, which is essentially an upper division independent study class for super-motivated students. It turned out that the Carter Cuff research and testing very quickly became the hot project to be part of once it was introduced, and as it was explained to me, this was a chance for people to take a break from the regular coursework and work on something going on in the real world, so the students were all over it. Works for me.

Over the last week or so just about everyone in the group who could fit into one of the two Carter Cuff prototypes I’d sent tried it out in the gym, and a couple of those sessions were videoed, and Lee set up a Google Groups page for everyone to post their experiences and reactions.

The first couple of hours was essentially long conversation where we all got to know each other, and I spent a good bit of time giving a fairly detailed background history on my accident and the development of the cuff. We also took lengthy detours into prosthetics, and because we were dealing with upper extremities, naturally Bob Radocy and TRS Prosthetics got a number of mentions. Also unsurprisingly, the Ottobock Michelangelo hand I wear got its usual rave reviews when I demonstrated its use - this was the first time any of the students had seen one up close.

As you might imagine, I walked away at the end of the day very psyched about all of this. What I had sort of forgotten about is that one of the big raisons d’être for universities is the free and unfettered exchange of ideas, and during the afternoons on each of the two days, there were lengthy sessions where everyone was just throwing ideas out without any real fear of whether it sounded weird or wrong or whatever. And the students had been doing their research and had been reading up, because the questions and comments and suggestions were sharp. Everyone was on top of things and really enthusiastic, and it showed. You could also see  that they had been working together as a group and had some real chemistry between them, and that these were all folks who were going to be heading into some sort of career along the lines of what we were working on today. It was refreshing, and overall it provided me with a real burst of energy and I am looking forward to seeing where this leads.

Part 3 of 3, which reveals our first clinical test project, will be posted on Friday, March 28th.

Once again, stay tuned.
