8-BITS GAME 12 - FEAR, PART IV: FREEZE

Sometimes we freeze until the light comes

Sometimes we fly into the night

Today is a “win-or-else” game against Top Shelf, the team just above us in the standings and whom we have already lost to twice in two games. If we lose to them today we are guaranteed to lose every tiebreaker with them if we end up even in the standings, so despite everything that has come before and all our ups and downs, at our 12th of 14 games we really now are at our first “win-or-else” game. I was a little worried going into this because we got shut out in our first game against them and then lost the second one by blowing a big lead.

For the second straight weekend, I’m heading straight from the airport to a game. This time it was a boys weekend in Las Vegas, as about 10 of us who are in a ginormous, insanely complex fantasy football league met up to hang out and launch our annual rookie draft. Socially it was awesome and I will say no more about that because it’s Vegas, but fantasy league-wise I had a great day, scoring the Bud Dupree from the Steelers and Arik Armstead from the 49ers. This time I had to stash my hockey gear in the car at the airport and head straight to the rink from LAX, and even though I had plenty of time to stretch this week, once again due to air cabin pressure had a seriously swollen left arm that was not quite wedging itself fully into my custom-made, fully-reinforced, fits-like-a-vice hockey prosthesis. If there was ever a first-world problem, this was it.

Two weeks ago was Adam’s breakout as our scoring machine, and this week he proved that day was no fluke. Today he scored four goals and assisted on a fifth as we played our most dominant game of the season to win 8-1. On top of that, we limited Top Shelf to less than 20 shots on goal and came oh so close to helping our goalie Nick get himself a shutout. (And don’t look now, but Nick is leading the league in Goals Against Average. Nice one, dude.)

Although it was a fun day out there, I one again had prosthesis-popping-off problems throughout the game. It happened on every faceoff and every shot I took, meaning I was continually jamming my arm back into the socket, which once again led to raw and broken skin, and this time some blood. Whatever. It’s hockey, and you have to pay the price. I did end up with an assist on a backhand pass into the slot to Hunvey, who had a guy right in her face and didn’t see it coming, but the pass bounced off her skate and deflected perfectly to a wide-open Adam, who skated it in and slammed it home. Late in the game when we were up 7-1 and just running out the clock, Adam sent me a perfect pass into the left circle at the faceoff dot, and as I took it in and tried to one-time it right at the goalie for the stoppage, my arm popped off and I weakly shot it while losing my balance. As I fell I watched the shot jitterbug across the ice and under the goalie’s pads and into the net. I felt bad, but Adam was happy to see me score and came over to help me up and deliver a congratulatory-but-gentle helmet-to-helmet head butt.

Now we control of our own destiny. If we win our last two games, we make the playoffs. The light is coming and we are flying into the night.
