8-BITS GAME 11 - FEAR, PART III: WITCH HUNT

Quiet in conscience, calm in their right

Confident their ways are best

This one fell right at the end of a most excellent getaway weekend to Tulsa to catch the opening night of Rush’s “R40” 40th Anniversary tour, which was documented here in excruciating detail three posts below. The following day was one of Oklahoma exploration via a drive up historic route 66 to the Kansas border on a beautifully grey day, hitting roadside attractions and offbeat museums to a soundtrack of the Grateful Dead’s landmark 4-hour performance on a similarly grey day at England’s Bickershaw Festival in 1972. There was even a pull-over to draft rookies in two of my dynasty football leagues - oddly enough, I ended up selecting Jacksonville running back T.J. Weldon in both while rain poured down outside; it was actually a perfect time to be off the road anyway. The trip home on Sunday started with a pre-dawn flight from Tulsa to Dallas, but the flight home to LA was delayed three hours by torrential rains and flash floods. I landed just in time to go home, change and feed the cat before heading right back out to the rink. The cat looked so confused and bummed as I walked out the door mere minutes after coming home. Poor Bronwyn. I’ll be back soon, dear girl.

Since I was still very much in Rush overload mode I went with Clockwork Angels for the drive, and I arrived in time to get my gear on but not really to stretch, so hopefully I’ll be okay. I definitely had issues getting my prosthetic hockey arm on, though - it fits very tightly, like a vice, and having just got off four hours of flights my body was swollen from the air pressure and I couldn’t get my arm all the way down into the very bottom of the socket. Hopefully this will correct itself during the game. Oh, and today is our final game against Pier Pressure, who are far and away the league’s best team. But  once we got to warmups we saw that they’re missing a bunch of guys this week. Maybe we have a chance?

Nope.

Pier Pressure are simply far better every other team in the league. No one can compete. Even with the really short bench they beat us handily, 8-3. They have great defenders who keep the play in our half of the ice, and up front they have a couple guys who can really skate and really score. One of their scorers had a four-goal day in front of a large number of his family members, but we didn’t know they were there. After his fourth goal, late in the game and with the victory well in hand, he pointed to his family members and celebrated, which got some bad words from our bench. Afterwards he and another of their guys stopped me on my way out and assured me that they weren’t trying to run up the score and that it was just a family thing. All good. Consider it done.

Aside from the losing part, the other tough thing that kept happening throughout the game is that the my prosthetic arm kept popping off. I’ve got it wrapped with stick tape so I don’t ever foresee it getting knocked off completely, which would suck and make for a viral Youtube moment that thousands of people could laugh at during their morning coffee, but every time I take a faceoff or a shot it was coming loose because my arm was too swollen to be wedged into the socket fully. This led to some raw skin and several days of band-aids.

The Stone Cold Bottom Line here is that Pier Pressure are going to win the league going away. If anything other than that happens it’s because half their team gets abducted by aliens between now and the playoffs. Plus, they make it point not to be jerks about winning so handily. They’ve got calm and confidence, and they know the league is theirs. With that in mind, I didn’t feel that bad at all about this loss as I spun Clockwork Angels again during the drive home. This was a great three-day weekend and I’m as lucky as one can be to have the life that I have now.
