8-BITS GAME 10: FEAR, PART II: THE WEAPON

With an iron fist in a velvet glove
We are sheltered under the gun

Hockey is a funny old game. After last week’s demoralizing loss it was a little bit tough to get as fired up as I normally would be for today’s game against the Canadiens. The last time we played them we got absolutely thrashed by a team loaded with substitute players, some of whom probably shouldn’t have been there. As a team we made an official complaint to the league, and I moaned about it here too - scroll down to the “Substitution Blues” post. But what I didn’t know until after today’s game was that Devin, the league director, took a look at what happened on that day and a few others and made the decision that three of the players in the Canadiens lineup were too skilled for our league and barred them from playing any more games for them. I’m not sure if any of them were actual rostered players as opposed to subs.

We didn’t actually know this going into today’s game, but what we did notice right away during warmups is that they were down several players, including their regular goalie, and that numerical advantage worked to our advantage last time when we almost stole a win against them early in the year. Maybe that’ll give us a fighting chance, I thought, and that’s good because today I have my cousin Jon with me. He’s now the guitar tech for a couple of the world’s best players and he was in town for the Ringo’s All-Star summer tour production rehearsals, and he and I used to play street hockey together as kids. As we drove to the rink I warned him to keep his expectations in check while we a knockout Paris show from the Grateful Dead’s Europe ’72 tour served as the sunny day’s soundtrack.

I would never have predicted the 8-Bits would win, let alone win by a 7-1 blowout. But, everyone on both teams was absolutely, uh, Funderstruck. Our best forward Adam Funderburg exploded and played the best game he’d ever played - he absolutely dominated the ice when he was out there. (Yes, yes, I know. It’s an AC/DC reference in a Rush-themed post. But it was the one I thought of at the time, and just you try and think of a Rush pun that incorporates the word Funderburg.) As we started scoring it just felt so, well, surprising, especially after the last month of losses which included that one-sided defeat against this very team. They got one goal back in the middle of the second, but then their goalie gave up a bad one late in the second or early in the third, and at that point her confidence disappeared and I don’t think the game could have ended quickly enough for her. It’s an awful feeling, I’m sure, and it’s one of many reasons playing goal is so difficult. Our seventh and final goal happened fairly late in the game when I carried the puck into their zone and laid a backhand pass across the top of the faceoff circles to Chris. He had a clear lane for a shot so I headed for the net in case of a rebound. But Chris, knowing we were at the end of a shift and that we had the game in hand, just lobbed the puck at her to give her an easy save and a cover so we could get a whistle. But somehow it went 5-hole and drifted into the net. Chris’ shoulders sagged and he gave me the “Dude, I totally didn’t mean to score!” look. We didn’t celebrate. I dragged the puck out of the net and slid it to the ref, and soon afterwards it was all over.

Although Chris ended up with two goals and two assists, today was Adam’s day to shine with 5 points from a hat trick and two assists. Adam was one of the people in my return-to-the-ice, learn-to-hockey-skate class from two summers ago at Culver City Ice Rink (teammate Charles was also in this class), and it was a beautiful thing to see this happen for him. And not only that, we now have the weapon we’ve been lacking for much of the year - a genuine, bona fide goal-scorer.

We’re still in this.
