“THIS IS THE LAST SEASON...IT’LL BE ANNOUNCED TOMORROW.” -Joe McGrath, GM, Charlestown Chiefs

Hockey classes got moving in 2014 with a big, dark shadow hanging over things. As I mentioned a few months back, the Culver City Ice Rink was in danger of losing its lease and having to close its doors after 52 years if the rink’s management wasn’t able to secure a new lease with the landowners. Everything was quiet on that front for several months around the rink, even when I asked about it periodically, and I interpreted the quiet to mean that the details were being worked out and that everything would continue as usual.

However, last week Culver City Ice Rink announced that it would be closing its doors permanently on February 2nd, as its lease is not being renewed. Instead, a company called Planet Granite who own and operate indoor climbing ad exercise facilities have signed a lease and are planning to convert the rink to a climbing and yoga center. And apparently the sticking point between the rink management and the landowners was that the landowner was essentially asking for the rent to be doubled for the new lease. And while Culver City Ice Rink couldn’t afford that, apparently Planet Granite can and will.

Uh-oh.

But, apparently this may not be over yet. Tonight there’s a meeting at Culver City City Hall where the locals can show public support for the rink. And while the local government cannot legally step in and demand that the rink be allowed to extend its lease, because the lease is a private and legal business transaction, and Planet Granite’s use falls within the uses for which that the land is zoned. But there seems to be the hope that they might be able to make something happen behind the scenes, even now, even that a lease is signed with a new tenant. I’m going to try and make the meeting if I can get out of work in time.

I have to be honest - on paper and in my gut, I’ve got a bad feeling about this. The rink is currently blowing up Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/saveculverice ) and Twitter ( http://twitter.com/SaveCulverIce ) in an effort to publicize their cause, but as of right now it looks like the last remaining hopes lie in two different scenarios. The first is that Planet Granite will back out. This scenario arises from the fact that there’s a layer of permafrost under the rink that will melt if the rink is melted and removed, which will necessitate significant environmental mitigation and cleanup costs because of 52 years of contamination from rusty pipes and chemicals. The “hope” is that when Planet Granite gets the results of the environmental testing, the cost of the cleanup will so great that they will opt out of the lease. And the second, we-need-a-miracle scenario is that someone sweeps in at the last minute to buy the rink from the current landowner with the intention of keeping the rink as-is. That seems unlikely, but this is the town where the term “Hollywood Ending” originated, so anything is possible. The fact that the Los Angeles Kings (with Hall Of Famer Luc Robitaille leading the charge) have been involved behind the scenes is also grounds for optimism - apparently they did put in a bid to lease the rink and keep the facility as-is, but they were not the high bidder.

Oh, and practice was really enjoyable today. I played defense throughout the 2-on-1 drills that made up the majority of the class and it felt great to be out there. I did reasonably well in the drills but didn’t fare as well in the games, largely because I’m still not used to playing right handed and I’m still flat-out missing the puck on passes and the like. A couple of the misses were so bad they were embarrassing, but I’ll get the hang of it.
